Wavelet approach to variable mass pendulum.

The contribution highlights how to characterize the motion of the variable mass pendulum. The wavelet analysis approach reveals to be an effective tool for extracting information on the spectral content time evolution (Variable mass pendulum behaviour processed by wavelet analysis, EJP, 38, 015804, 2017). In detail, the wavelet transform is applied to analyze the motion of an oscillating funnel that loses fine sand at an exponential rate. Contrary to the Fourier transform, that furnishes an average frequency value, the wavelet analysis allows to perform a joint time-frequency analysis. The work is addressed to graduate students.
