Polymer nanofibers: Piezoelectricity and stress-sensitive light emission.

Piezoelectric nanofibers can measure vibrations, acceleration and tiny forces. We introduced flexible piezomaterials consisting of sheets of aligned nanofibers of poly(vinylidenefluoride) copolymers, enabling ultra-high pressure sensitivity and integration in accelerometers and nano-generators. We investigated the complex electromechanical interaction among fibers and the piezomechanisms in individual nanostructures. More complex systems realized by doping with light-emitting molecules unveiled mechanically tuneable interactions at nanoscale, which makes the nanofiber emission sensitive to tensile stress.
