Protein aggregation in neurodegenerative diseases.

A$\beta$(1--40) peptide aggregation and fibril formation processes are recognized to have direct implications in the development of Alzheimer's disease. Thus there is a strong need to devise effective strategies to control and understand, at a molecular level, such structural events. In this talk we present the results of a combined experimental (X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy) and theoretical (classical and $ab initio$ Molecular Dynamics simulations) investigation of the interaction between the A$\beta$(1--40) peptide and/or small molecules able to prevent or enhance its aggregation and of the role possibly played by metal ions (mostly Cu and Zn).
