A novel neutron detector for 3-He replacement in environmental applications.

A composite detector has been developed by combining two different commercial scintillators. The device has the capability to detect gamma rays as well as thermal and fast neutrons with a single PMT readout. The new prototype would be a candidate to replace 3-He tubes in environmental application. 3-He tubes are used as a soil moisture probe over a large volume of terrain, they measure fluctuation in fast and thermal neutron background. Specific comparative efficiency tests with smaller prototype and standard commercial 3-He probes will be presented.
