Muography exploits the penetration power of high-energy cosmic-ray muons for imaging the interior of a variety of large structures, with applications ranging from Archaeology to Security, Geology and Volcanology. The MURAVES project has taken over from MU-RAY the development of a new generation muon detector, profiting of modern electronic technologies. The detector consists of a sequence of planes of plastic scintillators rods, read by Silicon photomultipliers and having an active area of one square meter. The potentialities of prototype muon detector for Archaeological investigations have been assessed. A 4 $m^{2}$ array will soon face the challenge of Mt Vesuvius.
