The construction of the General Relativity and Gravitation Community in the international arena, 1955-1975.
The talk discusses the historical developments of the community-building and institutionalization activities of the scholars working in the field of General Relativity and Gravitation from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. It is argued that these activities constituted a central part of the process known as the "renaissance" of general relativity. Far from being uncontroversial consequences of the growth of the field, it is shown that the attempts to build an international community and to organize it through institutional structures were shaped by Cold War tensions as well as by disagreements about the epistemic status of Einstein's theory of gravitation.
