Has surface nanostructuring any role in matrix free laser desorption ionization?

Nanostructured surfaces have been proposed as a viable method to widen the possibilities of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry. Here we propose a radically new and simpler approach based on a simple surface functionalization of bulk substrates. The method is general as it does not depend on the chemistry of the underlying substrate, it enables the desorption of several types of molecules and achieves the same detection limit of nanostructured materials.
