Colloidal crystals: a suitable tool for the development of nanoscale responsive structures.

Colorimetric systems based on the combination of photonic crystals and stimuli-responsive materials have drawn great consideration, due to their strong capability of manipulating the light propagation, vivid colour display and zero energy consumption. The assessment of optical and topological features is crucial for the design of colloidal photonic structures. In this paper we investigate the chromatic behavior of different colloidal systems focusing the attention on the variation in the optical response due to structural changes under external stimuli. The results are compared with a computational model developed in order to validate our understanding of the behavior of these chromatic systems.
