A new facility for small animal irradiation has been built in Catania at INFN-LNS (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare). Preclinical models allow a better comprehension of the biological mechanism and the therapy efficacy in order to improve the clinical knowledge. In this scenario, the first experiments have been performed using proton ions of 62 MeV and two different mice models in which subcutaneous Breast Cancer tumor cells were implanted. The animals have been recovered in a special self-sustaining transport unit. Before treatment, they have been anesthetized and positioned within a specific holder designed at LNS and allowing a precise and reliable treatment.
