Fragmentation and lateral scattering of 120 and 200 MeV/u ${}^{4}He$ ions in water targets.

In the last years ${}^{4}He$ ions have been reconsidered for cancer particle therapy as they potentially represent a good compromise between protons and ${}^{12}C$ ions under several aspects. In order to introduce ${}^{4}He$ ions in particle therapy, the development of a dedicated treatment planning system ($i.e.$, TRiP98) is necessary, for which basic physics information, such as the characterization of the beam lateral scattering and fragmentation cross sections, are required. This work provides an experimental study of the double differential cross section and lateral scattering of 120 and 200 MeV/u ${}^{4}He$ ions and their fragments interacting with water targets.
