A Monte Carlo approach to the preliminary activation assessment in the design of a new compact photon source.

In the design of a new photon source device, assessing activation is an important aspect that has to be considered to optimize, from a radiation protection point of view, the design and the choice of materials and to estimate beforehand the evolution in time of radiation dose rates to personnel. For that purpose the MC code FLUKA was used to simulate a new compact photon source including a copper radiator, a deflection magnet and a diffuser-absorber enclosed in an iron shielding. The activation was assessed at different positions and after different operation times of the device. The radiation dose rate was also assessed at key locations around the photon source.
