The FOOT experiment: Measurement of nuclear fragmentation in Particle Therapy.

Particle therapy uses proton or ${}^{12}C$ beams for the treatment of deep-seated solid tumors. Nuclear fragmentation of both beam and patient nuclei must be carefully taken into account. The FOOT experiment (FragmentatiOn Of Target) will study ${}^{16}O,{}^{12}C$ beams fragmentation at 200--400 MeV/$u$, on graphite and hydrocarbon target. This configuration via inverse kinematic approach explores both the target fragmentation induced by proton beam and the ${}^{16}O, {}^{12}C$ beams fragmentation. The detector to achieve the needed energy resolution and particle identification includes a magnetic spectrometer based on pixel detectors, a BGO calorimeter, and a $\Delta E$ detector with TOF capabilities.
