Using delayed luminescence to evaluate radiobiological risks.

The ultra-weak Delayed Luminescence (DL) has been correlated both to the effects of ion irradiation on seedlings growth and to apoptosis, oxidative stress in human cancer cells. In view of using non-invasive diagnostic tools in clinical survey, in the frame of the INFN project ETHICS pre-clinical experimental and theoretical studies to improve treatment and protection by charged particles, this work aims to investigate damages following ion irradiation by measuring DL emission of irradiated samples and correlate DL parameters to biological data as cell survival, apoptosis level, senescence, gene expression and factors involved in cell cycle progression, DNA repair and inflammation.
