Imaging of underground cavities with cosmic-ray muons from observations at Mt. Echia in Naples.
Noli P. per la Collaborazione MURAVES
A new generation of muon detectors, developed by the MU-RAY and MURAVES projects, was installed in the depths of Mt. Echia in Naples, the site of the ancient Palepolis, to explore through muography the complex system of cavities of anthropic nature excavated over the centuries. The success of the investigation demonstrates the substantial progress of muography in underground imaging, using a detector based on technologies that are now available. Almost 50 years after the pioneering search of a hidden chamber in the Chefren Pyramid by L. Alvarez, a widespread utilisation of the technique at that scale appears to be possible.
