Plasma assisted surface treatments of biomaterials.

Material biocompatibility is strongly influenced by bulk and surface properties. These characteristics are not interconnected, in fact many material possess the required stiffness and strength for bone prostheses applications without having the required surface properties for the implant osteointegration. Surface treatments, such as ion beam, chemical grafting or modification, low-temperature plasma are often required. Plasma-based techniques have gained increasing consensus for the surface modification of biomaterials, being more effective and competitive than other strategies to introduce surface functionalities. Here we present common plasma processing techniques and describe potentialities and applications of plasma, to tailor biomaterial interfaces.
