The Advanced Virgo interferometer for gravitational wave detection.

The construction of Advanced Virgo, a second-generation interferometer for the detection of gravitational waves, was recently concluded. The main improvements are a more sensitive optical scheme, reduced thermal noise and higher power circulating in the interferometer. To manage noise, a thermal aberration compensation system was introduced, the sensing photodiodes were seismically isolated, new control electronics was developed and provision was made to control stray light. Implementation of changes and first performance of the interferometer will be presented.
