High-performance integrated silicon AWG for optical network applications.

In this communication we report the experimental characterization of a novel integrated optical Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) realized on a silicon platform. This device is designed to be used as a multiplexing stage within an optical network on chip, where it is required to selectively add and drop signals. Our device shows a record crosstalk level of $-25$ dB and insertion losses around $-3$ dB. Moreover, we evaluate the effect on the AWG spectrum of the use of whiskered star couplers, where the reflectivity of the internal surfaces is lowered to reduce the back-scattered light.
